Carlos ReygadasCarlos Reygadas, the Mexican film director, has caused controversy with his straight forward and soulful stories. Reygadas is a former lawyer, who started to make movies after being influenced heavily by the work of Andrey Tarkovsky. The career change has been a succesful one. After Japón both Battle in Heaven and Silent Light have been in the Official Selection of Cannes.
Reygadas comes to Helsinki with his latest film, the hypnotic Silent Light. Uncontrollabe desires, religion and death remain Reygadas' main interests, but Silent Light is perhaps a bit more tender than his previous films. The film takes place in a repressive Mexican mennonite sect, where a religious man's moral is shaken as he falls in love with another man's wife. Carlos Reygadas is a guest at Helsinki International Film Festival from 25th to 26th September.
Veiko Õunpuu, Ilmar Raag, René Vilbre, Tambet TuiskFrom Estonia the director of Autumn Ball, a Finnkino-prize nominee, Veiko Õunpuu is a guest at the festival as well as Ilmar Raag, the director of The Class, a sadly topical film about school shootings and the director René Vilbre and actor Tambet Tuisk with their film I Was Here.
Aljona Polunina, Ilkka Matila, Jaak KilmiThe Revolution That Wasn't is a documentary about The Other Russia directed by a Russian underground director Aljona Polunina and produced by Ilkka Matila (MRP Matila Röhr Productions) and Jaak Kilmi.
Alex BrendemühlSpanish language films are well represented in this years festival with the themes ¿Cómo va España? and La Ola Argentina. Actor Alex Brendemühl is in two L&A-movies: Me is one of the Finnkino-prize nominees and he also has a supporting role in Silvia Munt's Pretexts.
Veronica Cura, Ignacio VarchauskyArgentine guests are veteran producer Verónica Cura and musician and producer Ignacio Varchausky. Cura is the producer of Live-In Maid that will be seen in the festival. Varchausky is the director of the tango school and orchestra La Orquesta Escuela de Tango and the producer and star of Si sos Brujo: A Tango Story. Other guests include representatives of the Argentine and Uruguayan film foundations.
Shinji ImaokaFrom Japan arrives Shinji Imaoka, the director of Tasogare and Uncle's Paradise. Imaoka also attends the Imaginary Japan seminar from 18th to 20th September, arranged by Finnish Society for Cinema Studies.
Chris Waitt, Aleksandra BoyarskayaThe thirty-something Chris Waitt is most known from his outrageous doll animation Fur Tv seen in MTV Finland and his supporting role in Edgar Wright's parodic hit Hot Huzz. Now Waitt has really kicked off with a charming document about himself and his sex life: A Complete History of My Sexual Failures. The film also features his latest discovery, Aleksandra Bouyarskaya.
Frédéric BeigbederFrédéric Beigbeder (b. 1965) is a noted literary dandy, who switched his career from advertising into literature. Beigbeder has written seven novels and worked as a critic and an editor. He is also the founder of the literature prize Prix de Flore. Beigbeder's novel 99f is now a film by Jan Kounen. Beigbeder also makes an appearance in the film. His new book, Au secours pardon is now published in Finnish by Like.
Aleksandr Burov, Vasily ShvetsovThe cinematographer and leading actor from Alexandr Sokurov's Alexandra, Alexandr Burov and Vasily Shevtsov are guests at the festival. Burov is a long time friend and collegue of Sokurov. Their first collaboration was the documentary about Andrey Tarkovsky, Moscow Elegy (1987). Vasily Shvetsov is an amateur actor, like most actors in Sokurov's films.
Henrik VikmanHenrik Vikman is a Swedish actor playing the memorable bus driver in the Finnkino-prize nominee film Involuntary.
Stian Kristiansen, Jacob ThuesenThe Nordic Council Film Prize nominated films will be seen at the festival before the winner is announced on the 15th of October. Jacob Thuesen, the director of the nominated film The Early Year’s of Erik Nietzsche Part 1 and Stian Kristiansen, the director of the Norwegian nominee, The Man Who Loved Yngve are attending the festival.
