Danish Treats 2010 / Director: Martin Pieter Zandvliet

Applause

A fearless, tour-de-force performance by star Paprika Steen is the main attraction of the Danish drama Applause, about an abrasive, alcoholic actress trying to regain control of her life and custody of her young sons. Debuting feature helmer Martin Pieter Zandvliet’s in-your-face, Dogma-style cocktail extracts the essence of Cassavetes’ A Woman Under The Influence and Opening Night, adds Martha’s monologues from a staged production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and spikes the whole concotion with scathing wit. Unbashedly fest material.

– Alissa Simon, Variety

For me this is a very personal film about betrayal. In a way you could say Paprika plays my father – just in a dress! – and I’m the abandoned child. But it’s also about hope – Thea is caught in limbo, but desperately wants a normal life, and to give motherhood another go.
