As a consequence to the public reaction of the film The Cove dolphins have been freed. The director of the film, Louie Psihoyos, reveals in his documentary the slaughter of dolphins that goes on in Taiji. The documentary also focuses on the effects of eating dolphin meat, which is sometimes mislabeled also as whale meat. Dolphin meat contains mercury. The film has been awarded in several occasions, for example at the Sundance Film Festival with the Best Documentary Audience Award. It has also created a lot of conversation all around the world.
The Cove's revelations of the cruel treatment of dolphins has led to an outcry from the audience as well as celebrities, such as Ben Stiller and Zooey Deschanel, to stop dolphin hunting. According to a news yet to be confirmed the Taiji fishermen are going to release those dolphins, that are not sold to aquariums. Usually, these dolphins are killed in silence. It is not sure, if the city of Taiji is going to ban dolphin hunting, as it is a tradition. The people of Taiji see dolphin meet in same respect as any other animal meat: food. "Louie Psihoyos, Director of the film, says, "The Cove is proof that one passionate person can make a difference and that together a few like-minded people can change the world. If the news is indeed true then this is a big victory for dolphins and the Japanese people."" - Gina Papabeis, Oceanic Preservation Society The director of the film Louie Psihoyos is visiting L&A festival from 17th to 20th Sep 2009 |
