LUX Nomination to Eastern Plays and Welcome

Two of L&A films have been nominated for Europe's LUX award 2009: Eastern Plays and Welcome.

Eastern Plays by Kamen Kalev is a portrait of troubled youth in Bulgaria and is a critical view of modern Europe. If Eastern Plays would win LUX it would be the first Bulgarian film to do so in the history of the competition. The other nominee also seen in L&A is Philippe Lioret's Welcome. Welcome tells the story of an young Iraqi man who dreams of moving to England but ends up being stuck in the wrong side of the Canal under immigration officers' rule. The third nominee is Hans-Christian Schmid's Sturm.

The nominated films are screened at the European Parliament in November and the winner of LUX is announced 25th of November 2009. The European Parliament votes for the winner. The awarded film will be subtitled in all the official 23 EU languages. Winner of LUX 2008 was Lorna's Silence by Dardenne brothers, and it was also seen at the 2008 L&A festival.
