Pom Poko
Pom Poko is directed by colleague of Hayao Miyazaki and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata. It is the first Takahata movie to be presented in Finland. Colourful and wild Pom Poko is a story of Tanukis, creatures of Japanese folklore, much like raccoons, but – of course – with some supernatural skills to fight back the huge construction project of Super-Tokyo that is threatening their natural habitat, idyllic forests of Tama-hills. Tanukis are using methods that would be useful for modern eco-movements, namely shapeshifting and ghost parades. They create general mayhem to stop the asphalt jungle from covering all. Only problem is that Tanukis cannot agree on much anything between themselves, and they have largely forgotten their ancient skills during easy life in nature paradise. Is there no future for Tanukis? Do they really have to adapt to ways of the human, like some other shape-shifting animals among us have already done?
