In Cold Blood 2

What doesn't kill Jussi Parviainen, only makes one stronger. The film and theatre director has often made use of his personal crises for subject matter and zest. The trials and tribulations in In Cold Blood 2 include a messy divorce, the death of his father, a personal debt spiral, insomnia and schizophrenia.

Starting from the divorce of Parviainen and Satu Ruotsalainen, astrologist, this filmic reckoning presents two Jussis in a duel; the blond average joe and the massively black-bearded ”dark me”. The latter is a bile-spewing holier-than-thou nutter – with killer lines. The post-divorce alienation grows into a meta-conscious trip full of death, sex and religion.

Breaking the boundaries of the documentary form, the film constructs its polished and unpredictable world from real-life experiences and interpretations. The stripped-down minimalist aesthetic of the first edition of the film (Alone, 1990) is replaced here by flaring collages and atmospherical mood music.

The film is produced by the grand old man of Finnish cinema, Jörn Donner, who, not unlike Parviainen, used to make daring appearences in his own films. Artists focusing on their own persona always generate controversy, but without them film art would be a whole lot more boring.
